Whether you have a tower desktop computer, or a notebook/laptop - simply hold down the power button for a number of seconds (usually around 10 seconds), this will force your computer to turn off completely. This procedure is particularly useful for a laptop, as they usually have the battery as a fall back power source, thus pulling the plug out the wall socket will not to force it to turn off.
Often forcing the power off, then simply turning it back on again, will clear whatever the issue was causing the computer to freeze. Please note sometime on booting your computer after a forced shutdown will result in the computer running a scan, you need to let it run through the scan, as it may need fix some issues with your computer.
